About Foskor Mine Museum

Limpopo is a South African province that borders Zimbabwe, Botswana and Gauteng. It is a developing province that has, as its main industries, mining, agriculture and tourism. Hot weather conditions and beautiful landscapes make Limpopo a very important part of local and international tourism and, as a result, attractions like the Foskor Mine Museum thrive, despite their being relatively small.

The museum is dedicated to celebrating the rich, long-standing mining history of the region and the important part this industry has played in terms of the local economy and international recognition. Foskor provides insights into the mining history of Phalaborwa, both ancient and recent, and the Big Hole, which is an opencast mine that has an impressive width of 20 kilometres and a depth of 450 metres. In addition, the museum explores ancient smelting techniques used thousands of years ago, when the Sotho folk mined for copper and iron ore in the region and set the scene for generations of miners after them.

A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to the cultures of the area and how they have shaped the modern identity of Limpopo.

The Foskor Mining Museum is situated on Koper Street, in Phalaborwa’s oldest house. It is the venue of a good deal of company events and corporate celebrations, making it an important part of the tourism and entertainment sectors.
