Nkuwa Wilderness Camp is a private off-grid safari retreat in the Selati Game Reserve, adjoining the renowned Kruger National Park. Situated within a 27,500-hectare Big Five wilderness area, this authentic four-tent bush camp delivers an intimate and environmentally conscious safari escape.
What to expect at the lodge/reserve
Nkuwa operates entirely off-grid, inviting guests to step away from modern distractions and reconnect with nature in a peaceful, low-impact setting where simplicity and calm take centre stage. The camp has been thoughtfully created to harmonise with its surroundings beneath a majestic Sycamore Fig Tree, from which it takes its name in the local Tsonga language.
With only four luxury en-suite safari tents, the atmosphere remains exclusive, relaxed, and personal. Each tent is positioned along a natural drainage line to provide privacy, comfort, and an immersive connection to the African bush. Guests can unwind to the soft chorus of cicadas, the distant cry of a fish eagle, and the unmistakable tranquillity of the wild, free from crowds, noise, and interruption.
Please see the individual room descriptions with photographs below, to assist you with your choice.
Evenings at Nkuwa are centred around the campfire beneath clear skies filled with stars untouched by city lights. Guests can exchange stories, enjoy hearty meals, and take in the timeless rhythm of the bush around them. Nkuwa Wilderness Camp offers more than a safari holiday, it is a return to nature and a celebration of Africa’s raw and enduring beauty.
Game drives and guided walking safaris create a meaningful connection with the landscape, led by knowledgeable guides eager to share their passion and insight. The Selati Game Reserve supports an impressive variety of wildlife, with more than 50 mammal species and over 300 bird species, along with remarkable plant life such as the rare Encephalartos dyerianus cycad, found only in this region.
Nkuwa Wilderness Camp lies in the centre of the Selati Game Reserve, a vast Big Five wilderness area in Limpopo bordering the Kruger National Park Covering 27,500 hectares of unspoilt bushveld, the reserve allows wildlife to move freely across the landscape.
During the dry season, vegetation thins out and animals gather around waterholes, creating excellent game-viewing opportunities. In the wet season, the bush becomes lush and wildlife spreads more widely across the reserve. Guests staying for two to three nights have a strong chance of seeing the Big Five. Other commonly sighted animals include giraffe, zebra, warthog, impala, kudu, waterbuck, wildebeest, bushbuck, baboon, and hyena.
Birdlife is prolific, with hornbills, rollers, eagles, kingfishers, and starlings regularly seen. Thanks to the reserve’s varied habitats, there is always the possibility of encountering rarer species such as wild dog, cheetah, or civet.
