About Herolds Bay Tidal Pool

Whether you’re staying in one of the charming guesthouses in George or the holiday apartments in Mossel Bay, Herold’s Bay is nearby and an absolute must for families that love the beach. This is a beautiful beach that combines impressive surfing waves, loads of sandy space to suntan or play and, as an added bonus, a spectacular tidal pool.

The tidal pool at Herold’s Bay is special for a number of reasons. First, it is massive. This means that there is plenty of space for families to splash around, or for the more energetic amongst us to do a few laps. Second, the water is a little warmer than that of the sea, because there are no currents that keep it moving, so the sun has a little longer to work its magic. But, because it is a tidal pool, the waves do splash into it when the tide is high; refreshing the water and keeping it clean.

The pool is home to plenty of life, which makes it awesome to explore. Bring your snorkel along to watch the little fish and crustaceans in their own habitat, or head to the surrounding rock pools to discover the life that calls this home. Children can bring their nets and try their hand at catching little fish and setting them free again. More than this, keen fishermen love to cast their lines into the ocean from the tidal pool wall.

The tidal pool is right on the beachfront; between the ocean and the little road of Herold’s Bay. So, visitors can park nearby and walk just a few steps to the cool waters. There are ablutions nearby as well as plenty of on-road parking. There are also some braai spots further down (near a second tidal pool that has been drained).

The homes and holiday accommodation of Herold’s Bay line the road, with stunning views of the beach. Herold’s Bay is only about 15 minutes from George and about 30 minutes from Mossel Bay, making it an accessible little feature of the Garden Route. The esteemed golf courses of Oubaai and Fancourt are also nearby.
