The variety of Garden Route accommodation is as varied as the people and unique little towns found along this pretty stretch. So, travellers exploring this scenic part of South Africa can opt for tranquil getaways, or busier towns that have plenty to see and do. For those that want the ultimate is serene escapes from the real world, Gouritsmond is a small village outside Mossel Bay that has a pace and laid-back ambience all its own.

One of the highlights of Gouritsmond is its Blue Flag beach, which combines awesome waves for swimming and watersports with a sandy beach and plenty of rock pools. But, just around the corner from this gorgeous – but sometimes wild – beach is a tranquil little tidal pool. It is perched right on the rocks that are lapped by the Indian Ocean, but is protected from the thundering waves or any tidal rips by its walls. This makes it fantastic for families with children because the tidal pool is safer than the open ocean. It is also great for older ones or anyone that isn’t completely comfortable going into the sea. And, because the water has time to warm up in the sun, it is a little more temperate than the sea on its doorstep.

This little stretch of the coast is popular among fishermen, so the rocky beaches on either side of the tidal pool are peppered with anglers.

There is parking on the doorstep of the tidal pool, as well as a few facilities on the narrow passage of grass for a barbecue or braai. This is the perfect spot to enjoy sundowners and snacks with friends and family while the waves crash onto the rocks and the sea spray laces the air. There is also a small ablution block near the tidal pool.

The tidal pool is minutes away from the main road of the little town; where a few old-school shops provide the basics. Mossel Bay is less than an hour away, and Cape Town is just over four hours away.
