About Waylands Wild Flower Reserve

Darling is a charming little town in the Western Cape, and is part of the magnificent Cape Floral Region. So, it is the perfect home for the Waylands Wild Flower Reserve, which celebrates the hundreds of species for which the West Coast and its inland areas are known.

Did you know? This reserve is not only important because it is so popular during the spring. It is also an integral part of the Lowland Fynbos Biome, which is critically endangered. In fact, more than 99% of this fynbos is already extinct.

Darling is just over an hour from Cape Town, and about 20 minutes inland of the magnificent West Coast National Park.

The Waylands Flower Reserve was established in the early 1900’s and is now home to about 300 species of spectacular wild flowers. Every spring, these burst into colourful bloom and create a vision that is humbling and breath-taking in its vibrancy and variety. The best time to see the plants and wild flowers is between the last week of August and the end of September, after the winter rainfall.

In addition to the impressive vegetation, Waylands Wild Flower Reserve is also home to plenty of animals and birds. Some are more elusive than others, so visitors should keep a keen eye out and see how many they can spot.

Look out for genets, mongooses, bat-eared foxes, Cape silver foxes, Cape clawless otters, caracals, and many more. The bird species range from the tiny Paradise flycatcher to the graceful secretary bird. Keen bird-watchers can spend hours exploring the reserve and identifying the many bird species that call this home.
