St Michaels On Sea, South Coast

Perched on the scenic Hibiscus Coast, right between the coastal towns of Margate and Port Shepstone, is the charming little retreat of St Michaels on Sea. It may be a small town, but it has plenty to offer visitors to KwaZulu Natal in the way of sea, sun, sand, and family fun.

The village is characterised by the pretty scenery of the South African coast, and the focus is certainly on its beach. Here, the warm Indian Ocean waters, golden sands, excellent waves, and peaceful lagoon combine to create an awesome spot for families, couples on honeymoon, and groups of friends that are after the summer holiday of a lifetime.

The beach at St Michaels is a hotspot for watersports, thanks to consistently good swell and temperate waters. Surfers love tackling the waves (which can sometimes be exhilaratingly big). This beach is also stunning for stand-up paddling, paddle skiing, jet-skiing, windsurfing, hydrofoiling, body-boarding, and boating. Thanks to shark nets and lifeguards, this is a safe swimming beach.

Snorkelling and SCUBA diving are musts at St Michaels on Sea, thanks to the massive variety of marine plants and animals that are living just below the water’s surface. These include colourful tropical fish and the exquisite coral reefs that they call home; as well as sharks, rays, game fish, and jellyfish. The waters are usually clear, with excellent visibility. So, bring your underwater camera along. The tidal pools are always a hit for the little ones.

Because of the many game fish here, St Michaels is also a great fishing spot for keen anglers that are hankering after a day in the sea spray.

Next to the beach, there is an inviting grassy patch and a restaurant. Sip on sundowners or enjoy a family picnic here, while the little ones swim in the lagoon or the little river. Paddle boats and canoes are available for hire, and are fun ways to explore the lagoon.

St Michaels on Sea is an excellent choice for a South Africa holiday because it is all about fun, convenient amenities, natural beauty, and plenty of accommodation. The accommodation in St Michaels ranges from self-catering apartments and lodges to luxurious guest houses and B & B’s. Choose this coastal village for your next weekend getaway, family holiday, or honeymoon.
