For thousands of years, chocolate has been enjoyed in some form or other by cultures around the world. The Aztecs believed that chocolate was a gift from the gods, and many today would be inclined to agree. Le Chocolatier, nestled in the winelands of Stellenbosch, celebrates this delicious treat that is so much more than an indulgence.

Le Chocolatier produces handmade chocolates in the old-fashioned Swiss tradition, without any kinds of preservatives or any ingredients that would extend their volume. Rather, they are made using fresh, pure ingredients that imbue each mouthful with the magical quality of irresistible chocolatey goodness.

Having been established in 2010, La Chocolatier has grown to include a state-of-the-art chocolate factory that can keep up with the local and international demand for pure, top-notch chocolates. Now, many of these products are stocked at certain SPAR and Pick n Pay outlets, as well as at a number of delis across South Africa.

There is a wide range of chocolates available. The most popular remains the Slab products. However, there are also sugar-free and ‘no added sugar’ options available as well as chocolates designed for those on low-carb or Banting eating plans. These chocolates are non-GMO and vegan.

The outlet in Stellenbosch stocks an array of decadent pralines and truffles (over 60 varieties, in fact), and a signature selection from the Slabs range. Coffee beans coated in chocolate or the delicious South African macadamia nuts coated in a caramel that is produced using a secret recipe that prevents the caramel from sticking to your teeth are both irresistibly moreish.

The cocoa beans used by La Chocolatier are grown in Africa, using methods that minimise the carbon footprint that they could impose.

Chocolate tastings between wine farms are a must during your time in Stellenbosch. The Mini Tasting is inexpensive and includes two pralines or truffles and a coffee, cappuccino or tea. Le Chocolatier is open seven days a week.
