About De Warenmarkt

Because it is right in the heart of the quaint university and wine town, De Warenmarkt is on the doorstep of many of the best Stellenbosch accommodation spots. This is great news for visitors to the Winelands that want to sample the wine and food that have put this region on the map, coupled with some excellent creativity and culture.

De Warenmarkt is situated in a historical building that dates back to the 1700’s, imbuing the entire market with an air of elegance and timeless grace. The merchants that come to the market to sell their goods are passionate about what they do and how they create.

These merchants include a speciality butcher from the Boland, suppliers of deluxe coffees, expert juicers of all things healthy and delicious, a bakery, and a decadent stall where waffles and pancakes are celebrated for all of their undeniable yumminess. The culinary flavours being celebrated at De Warenmarkt have distinctive notes of South Africa, with subtle references to international flavours and techniques.

SIMON is the new wine bar (named after Simon van der Stel), where some of the finest wines from Stellenbosch can be enjoyed in a laid-back, but chic setting. The fireplace is irresistible, and the menu is brimming with lovely tapas-style treats.

Kaapse Vonkel is a MCC and oyster bar, where the classic combination of fresh oysters and dry sparkling wine is explored in innovative ways. The fresh oysters are from Saldanha Bay on the Cape West Coast, and are best savoured with sparkling Simonsig MCC, while the cold craft beers are the perfect way to enjoy a hot summer’s day.

In addition to a Sunday carvery, the menu De Warenmarkt has items like yellow-fin tuna tartar, beef tataki, Thai beef salad, tender rump steak, and bitterballen. There are also decadent open sandwiches, an array of salads, pork loin chops, fish and chips, risotto, and rotisserie chicken.

Treat your taste buds to a real adventure at De Warenmarkt in Stellenbosch.
