About !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre
The !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre celebrates the San history, culture and heritage. But, it is more than just a museum. This centre allows the San people (who used to be known as Bushmen) to tell their own stories from their own experiences. In addition, it is a place where the remaining San (who number around 130 000 people over a vast area) can be educated, thanks to community projects aimed at the upliftment of their various little communities. Currently, this is the only heritage centre dedicated to the San people anywhere in the world.
The !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre recognises the immense value of the San folk, who are believed by some to be the first inhabitants of Africa and, in fact, the world. Their history and ancient ways of life are fascinating. But, the centre is also focussed on giving the descendents of these ancient San dignity and hope. Many of their modern communities have no access to clean water, education, welfare, basic sanitation, and medical care. So, the heritage centre has been established to tackle these and other important issues.
There are three main parts to the !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre. These are:
The Heritage Centre
This is dedicated to demonstrating the culture, customs and beliefs of the San. What makes it so special is that it has been co-curated by the San communities; so, it is accurate, vibrant and engaging. Exhibitions and guided trails (conducted by trained San guides) make this a one-of-a-kind attraction.
Community Satellites
Scattered around southern Africa, these satellites are designed to help the communities.
Digital Archive
This connects the community satellites to the world via a massive amount of documented information.
The !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre is located in Yzerfontein, just 70 kilometres from Cape Town. It is a must for families with children and teenagers, as well as for any visitors with an interest in the colourful background of South Africa and its surrounding countries.
