About Robben Island Helicopter Tour

Part of the beauty of South Africa as a destination is its poignant and complex history, and a trip to Cape Town certainly demands a visit to the iconic heritage site of Robben Island. This island was the spot at which so many of South Africa’s most prominent and influential political prisoners were once held; some for decades. The best known of these prisoners include Nelson Mandela, Jacob Zuma, Govan Mbeki, and Walter Sisulu.

NAC is the only company that currently offers helicopter flights over Robben Island, which is 14 kilometres from the V & A Waterfront on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. After your departure from the Waterfront, you will head to the southernmost tip of the island. The island is 3.3 kilometres long and 1.9 kilometres wide, making it a sizeable area to explore. From the air, you will see the prison, its grounds, the farmhouse, the rugged countryside of the island, and the wild ocean that surrounds it all. During the latter half of the year, you may even spot whales from these heights.

From the island, the helicopter will take its passengers along the Blouberg coastline, which is as pretty as it is varied in terms of swimming and kite-surfing conditions. Along the entire course of the flight, the view of the iconic flat-topped Table Mountain is a massive feature and an idyllic backdrop. There are stunning photo opportunities and a guarantee of memories for life.

Then, head back to the Waterfront for some of the best shopping and dining in South Africa, or to enjoy a sunset cruise on a yacht or catamaran. The Waterfront is only minutes away from the CTICC, City Bowl, Lion’s Head and Table Mountain; and is about 25 minutes’ drive from the international airport.
