The house of JC le Roux saw its beginnings when French Huguenot Jean le Roux first started planted vines in 1704. In total he planted 8000 vines thanks to his broad knowledge of viticulture. His descendants continued this tradition in Stellenbosch for generations to come. J.C. Le Roux makes sparkling wine by fermenting wine in the bottle, the old French way.
The bottle tops are frozen and bottles angled to allow sediment to sink to the bottom. Once bottles are uncapped, the frozen plus of sediment shoots out. The first sparkling made by JC le Roux was a Sauvignon Blanc in 1983. In the following years Pinot Noir, Le Domaine, Chardonnay, La Chanson and La Valleé followed.
The House of J.C. Le Roux was the first cellar dedicated to the craft of sparkling wine production in South Africa. Taste the bubbly in their tasting room and when visiting you can view the entire Méthode Cap Classique process, from beginning to the completion. You’ll also get to experience a sabrage demonstration which involves a sword being used to pop the neck of the bottle.
