For the ultimate in fresh produce, delicious indulgences, and family fun close to Durban, the Karkloof Farmers’ Market is your weekend go-to during your South African holiday. This indoor market is open every Saturday from 07h00 to 11h00, and is just a fantastic spot to relax in the heart of the Natal Midlands.
There is an array of stalls and vendors, which combine to make the market vibrant and unique. Local farmers converge to sell the freshest fruit, vegetables and herbs. More than this, there is traditional French artisan bread, organic cheese and yoghurt, moreish pizzas and pastas, and a variety of homemade pickles and preserves. There are ready-made meals for visitors that want to take a bit of the deliciousness home, and decadent nougats, biscuits, tarts and cakes for those hankering after a treat.
Enjoy an irresistible breakfast of pancakes or bagels, freshly squeezed juice, and a top-notch cappuccino for the ultimate pick-me-up. Biltong from the local Nguni cows is the best travel snack, and the fresh flowers will cheer just about anyone up.
Coming to the Karkloof Farmers’ Market is about more than shopping. You can meet the farmers or stroll around the nursery while the little ones burn some energy in the sand pit or on the jungle gym. And supporting the Midlands’ farmers means that you are part of the upliftment of this exquisite part of South Africa. And the indoor venue ensures that the market is open all year round. In fact, this is the perfect place to spend a rainy Saturday morning; surrounded by the smells of baking bread and freshly-brewed coffee.
The area of Karkloof is beautiful; comprising of tumbling hills and verdant forests. It is popular for its cycling trails, which showcase the countryside perfectly, as well as for the canopy tours over the trees.
