About Skyline Nature Reserve
Found between the coastal towns of Uvongo and Margate the Skyline Nature Reserve has a beautiful arboretum that includes almost 380 indigenous tree species, 76 of which are specific to the coast, and 400 exotic tree species.
Did you know? Most tree species within the Skyline Nature Reserve are clearly labelled.
Together with the neighbouring Uvongo River Reserve, Skyline Nature Reserve remains relatively obscure, visited only by those who know of their existence.
A pity, as this 40 year old arboretum with its hiking trails is well worth numerous visits. Neither reserve charges a fee, which may account for the rather humble facilities – in no way an indication of the standard of either reserve, as both are beautiful.
There are in fact three reserves around Uvongo – Skyline Nature Reserve, Uvongo River Reserve and the beach reserve, which is why the bird life in the area is so prolific.
Skyline Reserve is not only about birds, however, there are also blue and grey duiker, bushbuck and other small mammals scattered in amongst the trees if you are quiet enough for them to reveal themselves. You are not allowed to take dogs into the reserve as a result.
Most trees are carefully labelled.
