Kersbosstrand, Cape West Coast
For the ultimate in tranquillity, a true retreat from the hubbub of the big city, Kersbosstrand near Dwarskersbos is just about perfect. This little village invites travellers to sample the magic of the West Coast, where white-washed stone houses are perched along the sandy shores of the Atlantic Ocean and time seems to stand still.
In addition to the scenic backdrops of idyllic beaches, this area is known for its warm hospitality that is so typical of South African folk. The rich heritage and culture of the West Coast is celebrated in its homes, food, arts, crafts, and the friendly smiles of the locals. And no visit to Kersbosstrand is complete without sampling some of the world-class seafood on offer here; including prawns, mussels, crab, and delectable fish.
But, it is the natural prettiness of the area that is irresistible. The long stretches of the sandy beach lure visitors back time and again for languorous walks as they breathe in the salt spray and savour the moment in the warm sunshine. There is a 40-kilometre stretch from Kersbosstrand to Elands Bay, promising plenty of walking and beach-cycling pleasure.
This part of the South African coastline is also a favourite amongst kite-surfers that take advantage of the winds that sometimes wisp along the shores. When there is no wind, the beaches are great for swimming, stand-up paddling, and boating too. These stunning conditions make Kersbosstrand a fabulous option for families in search of a beach holiday destination to suit everyone.
Over the months of August and September, this part of the West Coast erupts into colour as the landscapes bloom with hundreds of thousands of wild flowers. During the rest of the year, the endemic fynbos creates a spectacle of breath-taking proportions.
This area is about two hours’ drive from Cape Town.
