About Berg River Region
North of the Berg River lie the little towns of Piketberg, Porterville, Wittewater, Goedverwacht, Veddrif, Aurora, Eendekuil and Redelinghuys.
Did you know? If dirt roads, little villages, star-studded skies, wheat fields and mountain peaks are your thing, then the Berg River region will more than fulfill your expectations...
Known collectively as the Berg River region, the towns fall into an area that moves from the icy waters of the Atlantic in the west across great swathes of the rural Swartland and the Sandveld to the mountains in the east.
The Berg River (more commonly known as the Bergrivier), which lies north of Cape Town, is 294 kilometres long with outlets into the Atlantic.
65% of the region is farmland, hence the predominance of farming communities. Common to everything is a sense of space, peace and quiet, and skies that still claim stars, unlike the nightscape of cities.
Each of the little towns has something unique to offer. In Porterville you can walk mountains, taste Jeripico dessert wine, and sight disa flowers – it was in Porterville that the yellow disa was discovered.
In Piketberg drink buchu tea, visit the Jewish Synagogue in Kerk Street or drive the Versveld Pass. In Velddrif visit Bokkom Laan, the Rocherpan Nature Reserve and Laaiplek.
In Aurora relax on the stoep of a Sandveld house, in Goedverwacht hike the circular Pear Tree Route.
In Wittewater do nothing but stroll the village, from Eendekuil drive the Pikenierskloof Pass, and in Redelinghuys explore the Verlorenvlei, the Tienie Rust Museum or the flowers, if there in season.
