Most of the overnight accommodation in Oudtshoorn honours the ostrich industry in one way or another because it is such an integral part of the Karoo. The restaurants, hotels, shops, street vendors and tourist attractions are infused with it in the form of colourful feathers, gorgeous leather and delicious meat products.

The CP Nel Museum celebrates the role of the ostrich trade in the rich history and heritage of Oudtshoorn, and is intriguing to visit. There are a number of exhibitions here. The Le Roux Town House is a unique house that dates back to 1909, built during the feather boom. It stands out for its use of Art Nouveau stained glass in the windows and for its architecture, which has managed to combine elements of luxury, fun and complexity. It has been a National Monument since 1980.

The Main Building has a stunning collection of displays, but is also recognised for the building in its own rights. This sandstone structure with its clock tower was built between 1900 and 1904, and was declared a National Monument in 1981.

Whether it’s a school tour or a fun day out with the family, the CP Nel Museum is well worth a visit. Oudtshoorn is about five hours from Cape Town and four hours from Port Elizabeth.
