Komatipoort, Mpumalanga:
Renowned as one of the most consistently hot towns in the country, with an average of 33 degrees centigrade in summer, Komatipoort mercifully lies at the point at which the Komati and Crocodile rivers meet on the western slopes of the Lebombo Mountains, which form a natural barrier between South Africa and Mozambique.

Marketed as “more than just a stopover“, Komatipoort is essentially a quiet little town just three kilometres from the Lebombo border post into Mozambique. Komatipoort serves mainly as a railway and customs centre, which is unsurprising given its orgins as a base camp for railway workers in 1890, and local farmers produce some of the most wonderful subtropical fruits that, no doubt, have the heat to thank for their mouth watering flavour.

The town of Komatipoort is probably most famous for the Nkomati Accord - a nonagression treaty signed in 1984 between the Mozambican government and the apartheid government of the Republic of South Africa - its focus, on the one hand to prevent Mozambique from supplying material to the ANC (African National Congress), and on the other, South Africa from supplying Renamo (the Mozambican National Resistance). Politics aside, the magnificent surroundings of Komatipoort today make a trip here worthwhile. Not only is Komatipoort close to the Kruger National Park, but hiking and bird watching in the area are superb, and tiger fishing in the Komati River worth the heat alone.
