KwaZulu-Natal's Ramsgate South Beach has been awarded the excellent Blue Flag award. This means that it is outstanding for its environmental initiatives and standards, amenities, hygiene, safety, and educational value. But, more than these criteria, it is a scenic and fun place to spend a summery day. In fact, thanks to this area's almost year-round sunshine, you won't even need to wait for summer - this beach is a January-to-December hit.

Ramsgate South Beach has beautifully warm water, which is fantastic for swimming, surfing and stand-up paddling. As the beach curls around, there are rocky areas that are not only irresistible for little ones to climb, but also create little rock pools for them to explore for hours.

The beach is at the end of an estuary, which is flanked by the gorgeous subtropical vegetation so typical of KwaZulu Natal. Although there is no swimming in the estuary, there are pedal boats and other fun activities here.

This part of the coast gets visited by whales during the second half of the year. Standing on the shores or sitting on a quiet bench and getting to see these mammoth mammals swim by is humbling and thrilling all at once. There are special whale-watching areas at Ramsgate South Beach so that spectators can get the best view.

The beach is wide and sandy, promising plenty of room for beach games, sunbathing, and relaxing. Lifeguards are on duty all year round, so families can enjoy the water and waves in safety. There are a number of signboards around the beach that have awesome information and pictures to tell visitors a little more about the plants and animals here. There is also a grassy area for families that want to relax and enjoy the fresh ocean air.

Durban and its international airport are about an hour from the beach.
