Visit The Christian Barnard Museum in Beaufort West. Christiaan Neethling Barnard (November 8, 1922 - September 2, 2001) was a South African cardiac surgeon, famous for performing the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant. Barnard was born and grew up in the town of Beaufort West. The Museum houses a display of awards presented to him and a replica of the original heart transplant theatre. You can also visit the house next door in which the Barnard family lived. Professor Barnard's ashes have been interred in the garden.
