About Gouritz Biodiversity Meander
The Gouritz Biodiversity Meander lies in the heart of the Succulent Karoo. It runs along the foot of the Swartberg Mountain Range, a World Heritage Site in its own right, and follows the Swartberg-Gamka-Rooiberg biodiversity corridor – an area incredibly significant in terms of biodiversity, particularly as this is where three important biomes - Succulent Karoo, Fynbos and Subtropical Thicket - meet, making it a world hotspot.
Did you know? There are a myriad walking trails, mountain biking trails, horse riding trails, canoeing and fishing, places to stay, and wine routes and wine tasting opportunities inbetween.
The idea behind the meander and the Gouritz Initiative is to create a conservation corridor along the Gouritz River, along which naturally occurring indigenous plants and wildlife will be able to move freely from the conservation parts of the inland Anysberg, Swartberg and Gamkaberg / Rooiberg mountains, to those conservation areas of the coastal moutains – the Langeberg / Outeniqua ranges. And to create a conservation area along the Gouritz River from Herbertsdale to the sea.
The meander is the priority focus area of the Gouritz Initiative, a project under CapeNature, whose chief aim is to restore priority biodiversity, and introduce sustainable benefits for the people in this area.
The idea of the meander is to travel from the Gouritz River Mouth to the Cango Caves via Herbertsdale, Van Wyksdorp and Calitzdorp. Every 10 kilometres or so one enters a completely new realm of vegetation – sandy soils of the coast and Coastal Fynbos, gives way to Renosterveld and clay soils, which then becomes Subtropical Thicket and finally Mountain Fynbos and Succulent Karoo.
