The Drakensberg Mountain Range is nothing short of spectacular, and is undoubtedly best enjoyed at a restful pace. The Sani Pass 4 x 4 Trail is a round trip that extends to the Lesotho border and back, providing some of the country’s most breath-taking views imaginable.
Just 20 kilometres from the town of Underberg, the Sani Pass Trail is 45 kilometres long that takes drivers over an exciting combination of rocks, boulders, gravel, mud and even areas that have succumbed to rock falls. In the winter, ice and snow are common in parts of the trail, challenging drivers to handle the slippery conditions.
It has been given a two to four grading and takes between three and four hours to complete. The drive is not particularly difficult, but there are plenty of twists and turns, as well as foggy conditions and sheer cliffs. The weather conditions are unpredictable, and prone to changing within just a few minutes. For this reason, visitors planning on tackling the 4 x 4 trail should be prepared.
Part of this trail includes the highest pub in Southern Africa, which makes for an excellent stop-over for refreshments.
In addition to the 4 x 4 trail, visitors can indulge in some excellent trout fishing, mountain biking, hiking or horseback riding during their time here.
