iKhayalamafu is a highly recommended property for self catering in Monks Cowl for anyone visiting the Drakensberg region.
We are high in the Monk's Cowl Reserve of the beautiful central Drakensberg Mountains and closer to paradise than anywhere else in the Champagne Valley. Step from your cabin into the Ukhahlamba / Drakensberg World Heritage Site and walk beneath the dramatic Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle. Then enjoy the quiet and peace of the evenings far from civilization, with the sound of the stream flowing gently past your veranda.
You will love the seclusion and peace, and your cabin's log fire will warm your soul. If you are looking for a romantic destination and you enjoy the majesty of the Drakensberg Mountains, this is the place for you. We have over 95 hectares of mountains, streams, spectacular waterfalls, and indigenous forests, covered by trails that are closed to the general public, but open to you, our guest.
Both cabins have a large double bedroom / lounge, with a cosy fireplace. We supply firewood harvested sustainably from our own indigenous forests, and make up the fire when we service your cabin each morning of your stay. Your kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, hob, microwave oven, crockery, pots and pans, cutlery, etc. Your outside deck has a covered barbecue and furniture for open-air dining — we supply wood and kindling — while your bathroom is luxuriously large and provided with linen and towels.
We do not accept children or pets, and each cabin takes only one couple.
We generate eco-friendly electricity from a combination of solar and hydro power. We are not hardwired into the national grid, and we do not have power cuts. The cool water comes from our fresh mountain streams; it is only out of the rock for five minutes when we capture and filter it. The only flavour it merits is good whisky.
You will drive a kilometre and a half into the wilderness along a single-track road to reach this breathtaking destination. Normal cars will make it up with no problem, but leave your low-slung car or low-profile tyres at home, as well as the cares and stresses of the modern world.
Please Note:
We offer only self-catering accommodation. We do not supply any food, not even breakfast. We are not able to accommodate any children under the age of 18. We have a strict 'no children' policy.
Not many get to experience these wonderful mountains close up. Whether it is raining, snowing, or gloriously sunny, be inspired by breathtaking scenery, friendly hospitality, and an unparalleled sense of place. Bring your hiking boots and your binoculars; look out for the buck, eagles, vultures, and other wonderful wildlife on our property; enjoy the sheer range of indigenous flowers and trees; gaze at the clear night sky with its dazzlingly bright stars; or simply put your feet up and chill out.
We look forward to your stay with us in this magical hideaway.
What is loadshedding? It refers to the temporary suspension of electricity provided by Eskom, South Africa's electricity provider, to reduce consumption and thereby the load on the national grid. To compensate, South African property owners are turning to solar power, inverters with backup batteries or in some cases generators to keep the power on, wherever feasible.

This peaceful and tranquil retreat is surrounded by trees and nestled into the mountainside, providing a serene environment filled with the soothing sounds of bird songs and the nearby river. The cottage itself is private, spacious, and exceptionally comfortable, equipped with everything you need for a self-catering stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed a 3 night stay at the Injoka cabin. The spacious cabin had everything we needed and more. Best bed ever! Spectacular and pristine surroundings and lovely hikes in the reserve, doable even forth not so young ones. Thank you Paul and Ricky, perhaps one day we will visit again.
