North Coast DolphinsMtwalume, South Coast:
Mtwalume is a small seaside village situated in the Umdoni Coast of KwaZulu Natal. This quaint village was named after the Mtwalume tree, the bark of which was traditionally used by the Zulus as a remedy for dysentery.

In 1868, George Robert Parsons discovered gold in the Mtwalume River and in the following two years some 20 ounces of gold were recovered. Today, Mtwalume is mainly a holidaymaker and fisherman’s village. The general appearance of the village is that of a rural wooded environment boasting an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna. Mtwalume is a little stretch of sub-tropical paradise boasting untouched sandy beaches, lush foliage and shimmering waters. The waters are superbly warm and there are numerous lovely tidal pools ideal for safe swimming.

The main feature of this village is the Mtwalume River which forms a beautiful lagoon where it enters the sea. The river is approximately 85km long and was named Mtwalume by the Zulus because of the tall upright Mtwalume trees growing on the river bank. This area is exquisite an ideal for a variety of watersports such as scuba diving, angling, windsurfing and board surfing. If that is too much activity for you, one can also simply relax and soak up the sun whilst admiring the vibrant birds and wild life along the banks. Also, hike up to the spectacular Mtwalume Falls which is just a little higher up. For the holiday makers, Mtwalume has 3 caravan parks, 3 holiday resorts and a social and ski boat club. Mtwalume Ski Boat Club holds numerous records and is well known in the KwaZulu Natal. Fishing and spearfishing is very popular in Mtwalume. There is plenty of popular spearfishing or fishing spots where the main catch is snoek and garrick.

Mtwalume also boasts a shopping centre to cater for holidaymakers and residents, consisting of a butchery, bottle store, post office, supermarkets, cafe-take-away, restaurants and hardware store.

Arrange a visit to the Luthuli High School. This school was named for Albert Luthuli who was one of the founders of the African National Congress and winner of a Nobel Peace Prize. Here a passionate art teacher has painted superb pictures on the walls of disused buildings depicting scenes of past and present history. Most of the artwork produced by students is sold to visitors. Quiet relaxation, an array of exciting activities, exquisite scenery, historial heritage and pristine beaches are some of the reasons why Mtwalume should be your next holiday destination!
