About Battery Park

In 2018, the newest addition to the Cape Town non-stop entertainment scene opened its doors. Battery Park is described as an urban recreational area, and is conveniently located right in the heart of the V & A Waterfront, which remains one of the most popular tourist attractions on the African continent.

Battery Park is situated on the site that was once a major fortification, built in 1784 by the Dutch settlers. Less than 50 years later, in 1827, this fort was converted by the British into a prison. Although most of it has since been demolished, there are still remnants of the original structure, making this an important historical site.

But, today, Battery Park has been transformed into a space for the young and young-at-heart. There is a basketball court and skate park, as well as access to stand-up paddling, swimming and kayaking facilities in the waterway. There are swings, jungle gyms, and a scooter path for little ones, and bicycles are available to hire and explore the Waterfront. There are also braai, or barbecue, facilities here for those wanting to relax and take their time. Indigenous fynbos and tall trees give the entire area a relaxed, idyllic vibe. Such a wide choice of things to do and see makes Battery Park fantastic for the whole family to enjoy.

Battery Park is accessed via a number of pedestrian routes, and is well connected to various streets. It is also on the waterways, on which water taxis transport visitors. These waterways connect the V&A Waterfront to the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Under Battery Park, there is a parking garage that can accommodate 1 200 cars.

The V & A Waterfront and Battery Park are right in the hub of Cape Town. Hundreds of restaurants, shop, and boutiques are located in the Waterfront itself, and within its immediate surrounds.
