About Richmond House Museum

The Eastern Cape of South Africa may be one of the quietest provinces, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful. Exotic-looking beaches that stretch on for miles and verdant rolling hills are what this part of South Africa is all about. The breath-taking Kowie River Mouth is situated in Port Alfred, about two hours from Port Elizabeth, and is home to Richmond House. This area speaks of the sheer loveliness of the province.

This property occupies seven acres of the Eastern Cape landscapes. It was established in 1840, when the Honourable William Cock, a settler and entrepreneur from Cornwall, began his efforts to convert the Kowie Estuary into a port. He built his magnificent home on the banks of the Kowie River and named it Richmond House. Thanks to its design, it was soon dubbed Cock’s Castle. Over the years, though, it underwent a number of minor renovations.

Sadly, in 1999, the property had become so neglected that it was demolished. However, everything that could be saved was put into a special replica of Cock’s Castle, known as the Richmond House Museum and Music Room.

Today, this Edwardian-style museum offers tours by arrangement, and visitors can get a peek into the colonial South Africa of yesteryear. The original doors of the castle, massive fireplaces, illustrated panels of history, paintings and the original light fittings remain on display for the enjoyment of those with a penchant for history and heritage. A number of fantastic musical performances are hosted by the Richmond House Museum and Music Room, which are always made that much more special by the classic décor and architecture.

Visiting the Richmond House Museum is stepping into a bygone era of elegance, grace and culture.
