About Paul Kruger Gate

Paul Kruger Gate is regarded as the quickest way to reach Skukuza, and one of only three gates into the west region of southern Kruger National Park. It also allows good access to Lower Sabie. As a result, the gate sees a fair amount of traffic.

Did you know? The jewel in the crown of the South African National Parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals.

An imposing statue of Paul Kruger's head rests upon a large granite block at the gate. As the park's namesay, the figure has remained in its position despite the controversial decision in late 2003 to remove it, after a book on the park by Jane Curruthers revealed that the former Transvaal republic president played no part in forming the reserve.

Paul Kruger Gate lies on the Sabie River - a good place for spotting hippos and crocodiles sunning on the river banks. The Sabie is the major watercourse of the southern Kruger and it cuts in a south easterly direction through the park and on into Mozambique. Birders head to the river bridge particularly to catch sightings of Pel's fishing-owl, seen most often close to sunset.

The Skukuza Rest Camp lies 12 km from the gate. But watch your speed limit – 40 km an hour - as the H11 is probably the one place in the park where you're most likely to get caught speeding. You will want to slow in any case as the thorn thickets along the banks of the Sabie are renowned for spotting bigger predators.

Skukuza lies in the heart of Big Five country. Which makes it popular. It is also one of the largest camps in Kruger with a lot of Kruger Park accommodation options, and the Skukuza golf course.

Bush walks and drives in the area are rewarding, but possibly the best route to follow when on self-drive is the drive between Skukuza and Lower Sabie along the wooded banks of the Sabie.

Game: lion, black wildebeest, gemsbok, buffalo, black rhino, warthog, spotted hyena, thick-tailed bush baby, and purple crested lourie.
