About Whale House Museum

Hermanus is a small coastal town in the Western Cape, about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. But, it is so much more than the Mother’s City little neighbour. This is one of the top whale watching spots in the world. In fact, this is one of the few places on the planet in which the whales can be seen from coastal footpaths, many of the hotel rooms and a number of the restaurants in the town.

Did you know? At the Whale House Museum, young and old locals and visitors will learn more about these magnificent animals before they head outside and possibly catch sight of them frolicking just metres off the shore.

As the acclaimed home of the whales between around June and December, Hermanus celebrates these cetaceans in many ways, not least of all at the Whale House Museum. Here, the mysteries of their behaviour, migration, diet, reproduction and communication are uncovered within interesting exhibitions and regular demonstrations.

The installations and exhibitions at the Whale House Museum are beautifully written with stunning photographs and impressive models. There is a full-size southern right whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling to convey the incredible scale and wonder of these marine mammals. In addition, the sizes of various whales are compared to other animals and humans to create a clear concept of how massive these gentle giants really are.

In addition to whales, visitors to the Whale House Museum will learn about the other marine animals that live in symbiosis with them. The movements of whales through the oceans as they head out to familiar breeding grounds year after year and the behaviour that they display when they peek out from above the ocean or make dramatic splashes with their flukes is also examined.
