About Hoys Koppie

By definition, a koppie is a small hill on an otherwise flat area, and Hoy’s Koppie certainly earns its name by this account. This little treasure is dramatic in its stature, beautiful for its fauna and flora, and thrilling to explore. From the top of the koppie, there are breath-taking 360-degree view of Hermanus and its surrounds.

Did you know? The Fernkloof Nature Reserve and Hoy’s Koppie are less than 10 minutes from the centre of the coastal holiday town of Hermanus, and about an hour from Cape Town and her International Airport.

It was named after Sir William Hoy, the head of the Cape and South African Railways in the 1920’s. He was born in Scotland and took a particular liking to this exquisite koppie on the South African coastline. As a result, he was buried on its crest. Later, his wife was buried next to him and, today, both of these graves are preserved at the koppie’s apex.

The top of the hill is at 75 metres above sea level, which slopes down to about 40 metres above sea level. This koppies is laden with stunning fynbos, which is a diverse endemic plant family that is characterised by stunning colours and textures.

This is not only beautiful, but is also home to loads of fascinating bugs and birds. Hoy’s Koppie is part of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, which is home to at least 1 250 different plant species.

There is a path that has recently been revamped so that it is now safe and accessible for visitors, even for those making use of a wheelchair. It is 1.2 kilometres long and is easy to manage, showcasing Hoy’s Koppie and Hermanus to perfection.

There is a cave on the koppie that was home to artefacts that have been estimated to be some 250 000 years old. The cave is always a hit to explore, especially with little ones that love an adventure.
