This owner-run expedition is set apart from others like it for the extensive experience of the owner-cum-skipper and the smaller boat. The limited boat size ensures that each adventure includes only a small number of fishermen, which ups the opportunities of those on board to catch the fish they’ve been hankering after. The skipper has been fishing for tuna off the Western Cape coastline since 2000 and knows the rhythm of this sea like his own heartbeat. Therefore, he is able to give visitors the best advice and to head to spots that are more likely to have a variety of fish species.

In addition, safety on these charters is a priority. The boats are surveyed by SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) every year, and the skippers licences are all up to date.

The tuna charter is a full-day expedition, which can be enjoyed on the Butt Cat (built by Nauti-Tech) called “Canyon Man”. It is available from September to June for between one and three fishermen. From Hout Bay, you will head to Cape Point, where the yellowfin tuna fishing is some of the best in the world. Of course, there is also big-eye, longfin, and southern bluefin tuna here as well. Yellowfins are known to fight back, making for a fun challenge for anyone that catches one.

Wild Ocean Fishing Charters uses three different methods for yellowfin tuna - baiting, trolling (baiting more than one line), and popping and spinning. Catches have ranged between 15 and 90 kilograms, although most are a hefty 45 kilograms. The longfin tuna prefer light tackle. Anglers can also look forward to catching mako shark, dorado, and skipjack tuna.

Snacks, lunch and refreshments are available for those heading out on this awesome adventure. While waiting for your prize tuna, keep an eye out for dolphins, humpback and southern right whales, and oceanic sunfish.
