The magnificent Swartberg Mountain Range is nestled within the beauty of the Little Karoo of the Western Cape. Its rugged faces are adorned with green vegetation, while roads and trails are carved into the orange rock. All of this is set against the crisp blue of the high African sky, far away from the buzz of city life.

One of the best ways to indulge in some of South Africa’s loveliest scenery is by tackling the Swartberg Hiking Trail, or one of the shorter trails that traverse these mountains. The Swartberg Trail is challenging, sometimes made even more difficult by strong winds and sudden rain. However, the stunning surrounds make it well worth the extra effort.

It is a five-day trail and the end of each day brings with it the promise of a very inviting hut, which has the basic amenities (a bed and ablutions), spectacular views of the Karoo, and a braai area, where hikers can enjoy a hot cup of coffee or an ice-cold beer while comparing their experiences and some award-worthy photographs of their day’s adventures.

Along the trail, the fynbos and dramatic waterfalls provide a feast for the eyes and lasting memories.

The Swartberg Hiking Trail is for seasoned hikers that are relatively fit. It is close to Oudtshoorn, home of the Cango Caves.
