About Calitzdorp Country Walk
The semi-desert of South Africa’s Karoo is a very special place because it combines extraordinary landscapes with plenty of choice when it comes to choosing your overnight accommodation. The Calitzdorp Country Walk is based in the little town of Calitzdorp on Route 62.
Calitzdorp constitutes part of the succulent Karoo biome, making it a particularly valuable area in terms of its flora and natural beauty. And the Calitzdorp Country Walk celebrates this beauty and diversity at a relaxed pace. This leisurely walk is conducted through some of the World Heritage Sites of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve, where an incredible array of succulents flourish. It allows visitors to be part of this unique biodiversity and always offers something different, depending on the time of year.
The country walk is conducted by a professional and experienced field guide, conservationist, and plant enthusiast. Of course, this guide will provide fascinating insights into the vegetation, focussing on the hardy succulents; but, they will also be able to share information on the local history, agriculture, and some of the landmarks.
The Calitzdorp Country Walk is best enjoyed during the morning or as the sun is setting over the Karoo, when it is a little cooler and more comfortable. Along the way, there is a lookout point, which is the perfect spot at which to enjoy the picnic (consisting of moreish fresh produce). From this idyllic picnic spot, views of the farmlands and the little Karoo town of Calitzdorp are breath-taking.
The country walk takes two hours to do and is suitable for just about anyone that is able to walk. A minimum of two and a maximum of eight walkers can go on each excursion. Remember to wear sunscreen, insect repellent, comfy shoes, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat for the duration of the walk. Bring along drinking water and a camera so that you can capture this memorable adventure. Transport to and from the various guesthouses in and around Calitzdorp can be arranged.
