Calitzdorp is a small, charming town in the heart of the Klein Karoo, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is also just 12 kilometres away from the fun and exciting Bojaankop 4x4 Trail. This part of the country is characterised by rolling vineyards, scrubby vegetation, beautiful mountain ranges, and friendly folk.

The Bojaankop 4x4 Trail is 15 kilometres long, and is a circular route that takes drivers to the top of the Bojaankop Mountain for some stunning views. It takes anywhere between two and four hours to complete, depending on the pace you prefer and your skills or driving abilities. It has a formal grading of between two and three.

The terrain of this trail comprises loose gravel and rocks, river crossings with plenty of stones to add to the challenge, and steep slopes to climb up and down of. No guide is necessary, but an accompanying driver can be arranged in advance, if you prefer. While challenging, there are no areas that are considered to be dangerous or risky for 4x4 drivers.

While the Bojaankop 4x4 Trail is suitable for year-round exploration, the spring time is particularly pretty, as the entire landscape is speckled with colourful wild flowers that erupt into bloom. The trail itself is situated on the Matjiesfontein Guest Farm at the foothills of the magnificent Swartberg Mountain Range. The trail has been used for generations, dating back to the early 1800’s, when it was traversed by local farmers using donkey carts and ox wagons.

The Bojaankop 4x4 Trail runs along the Gamka River, which can sometimes become quite full and present an added challenge to the drivers. The local vegetation is nothing short of spectacular, and includes some beautiful indigenous fynbos.
