The picturesque town of Dullstroom, in the gorgeous Mpumalanga Highlands of South Africa, is a small, serene getaway. It is also the proud home of the Duck and Trout restaurant and pub, which is frequented by locals that love the warm hospitality and good food, and visitors that are keen to experience the loveliness of Dullstroom in all its facets.

The building was once the local country dairy before it was converted to an authentic pub in 1994. The atmosphere is always jovial and is made even cosier during the icy winter months by the inviting log fires. Little ones love the outdoor playground, which is visible from the deck so that parents can relax with a drink and a meal while the children while away the hours having a world of fun.

The wood-burning oven has become a major feature and the Duck and Trout has earned plenty of favour for the excellent range of pizzas available here. These include a breakfast pizza (complete with bacon and eggs), riblet pizza (with basted ribs on top), and Franco’s special pizza (topped with bacon, mushrooms, anchovies, chilli and onions). There are also folded pizzas (or calzones) on offer. The variety of calzone fillings is irresistible.

Starters include the likes of peri-peri chicken livers, trout pâté, focaccia, and soup. Pub lunches are always a hit and diners can choose from burgers, fish and chips, chicken schnitzel, Prego with egg and chips, or a snack basket. The hearty main meals on offer include half a grilled chicken (lemon and herb, or peri-peri), slow-cooked oxtail, steak, a rack of pork ribs, honeyed pork chops, grilled stuffed trout, and a delicious lamb curry. The pasta menu is also impressive in its variety and includes traditional favourites like arrabiata, carbonara, Napoletana, alfredo, and Bolognese.

Visitors to Dullstroom can explore the scenic surrounds on a number of hiking trails in the mountains, and can spend time at the Dullstroom Birds of Prey and Rehab Centre. Fly fishing is also very popular in this part of the world.
