One of the highest passes in the region, Steenkampsberg Pass joins Lydenburg to Roossenekal.

Often mistakenly called De Berg, after the highest peak in the range, Steenkampsberg Pass has some incredible scenery that includes the Steenkampsberg Plateau, a wetland region that is home to three endangered species of crane – blue, crowned and wattled.

Heading in a south-westerly direction up the slopes of Steenkampsberg, the road follows a few easy curves uphill for about 9 km. The road takes a big right bend near the summit where there is a detour to the right along a gravel road to the top of De Berg.

The Steenkampsberg is a mountain plateau with a largely unspoilt environment that is home to a wide diversity of animals, birds and plants.

From the summit there is an immediate descent in a series of gentle and easy curves for about 8 km before ending at Kliprivier farm. Bikers speak about the 'high speed twisties' of Steenkampsberg, and note its scenic tranquility.
