About Equestrian Statue
East London may be a relatively small town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, but it has played a major role as an important port (being the only river port in the country) since the 19th century.
Many of the Colonial Division units of the Boer War were raised in East London, making it a significant colonial town, despite its never having been the site of conflict.
The bronze Equestrian Statue on an Irish marble plinth was erected in 1908 in honour of those men and officers that were killed in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902.
The names of men from various divisions are included on the statue. In 1910, this was named the best equestrian statue by the Royal Academy.
