The Marakele National Park is situated in Limpopo Province, and is one of the natural gems that showcase the beauty and variety of South Africa. This park is home to the Marakele 4x4 Trail, the only one of its kind in this reserve.
The Marakele 4x4 Trail is a circular one that is 49 kilometres long. It takes between 24 and 52 hours to complete, depending on the pace and technical ability of the driver or group. There are two overnight camps along the way, making this trail an adventurous excursion that is ideal for those that want to be part of the local landscapes while enjoying some adrenalin-inducing experiences. The terrain of this trail includes steep, rocky slopes, mud, river crossings and management tracks. The entire trail is navigated with the assistance of an experienced park ranger.
The Marakele 4x4 Trail is open between April and October. These are the dry months, which ensures the safest driving conditions.
Drivers need to be completely geared up with water, food, medical supplies and toiletries as there are no formal ablutions or amenities along the way.
This eco-trail promises nature-lovers enormous diversity in the way of plant and animal species along its course. These species include elephants, rhinos, big cats, rare yellowwoods, cycads, ferns and an impressive array of birds. The rangers are also able to arrange bush walks, which give drivers the opportunity to experience the surrounds from a different perspective.
