Calvinia, Upper Karoo
This attractive Karoo town lies in one of the largest wool-producing districts in South Africa, about half-way between Cape Town and Upington.
The Calvinia Museum, housed in an old Art Deco synagogue in Church Street, focuses on farming, transport and the lifestyle of the early inhabitants. The Tourism Office in the museum arranges guided walking tours of the town's special places of interest.
Two trails through the Akkerendam Nature Reserve offer opportunities to admire the lovely flowers found only in this region. The Hamtam Meat Festival is an event held in Calvinia every year in the last week of August.

Not a bad little town. Not your "bright lights, big city" type place, but quaint and with an endearing character all of its own. An interesting place to stop over, with some great guesthouses, and if you're willing to wait a while, some good food at Myl 250 and Blou naartjie. Peaceful, great for stargazing and still a "properse dorpie" ...and don't forget the annual "Vleisfees" in August if you enjoy sinking your teeth into anything meaty...
