Porcupine Safari Lodge is situated on the banks of the Orange River at Tzamenkomst Farm, alongside the N1 near Colesberg. This convenient position makes it an excellent overnight stop for travellers between Gauteng and the Western Cape, while its tranquil setting provides an opportunity to experience the distinctive scenery and wildlife of the Karoo.
Tzamenkomst Farm forms part of the Gariep Eco-Reserve, an eco-tourism and game-breeding collective comprising several working farms. The reserve offers visitors an opportunity to experience the vast Karoo landscape and its diverse wildlife, making the lodge equally suited to a convenient overnight stay or a longer rural escape.
Porcupine Safari Lodge is completely separate from the main Tzamenkomst Farm lodge and operates as a private four-unit facility. Guests have access to a dedicated boma dining area, swimming pool, staff and other amenities. Sunset views across the river and surrounding farmland provide a particularly memorable finish to the day.
Game Drives
Explore the wildlife and varied landscapes of the reserve on a guided game drive. More than 20 wildlife species occur in the area, including giraffe, sable antelope, aardvark, black impala and other species adapted to the Karoo environment. Drives provide an opportunity to observe these animals in their natural surroundings while discovering the diverse terrain of the reserve.
Fishing
The Orange River offers rewarding angling opportunities, particularly for anglers interested in South Africa's renowned yellowfish. The river supports both smallmouth and largemouth yellowfish, along with sharptooth catfish, carp and three species of bream. Its varied fish population and healthy ecosystem make fishing a popular way to spend time beside the water.
Kayaking
The river provides an enjoyable setting for kayaking, whether you are seeking an active outdoor adventure or a leisurely paddle with family and friends. Guests can hire one of six available kayaks and explore scenic sections of the waterway, passing through picturesque farmland and navigating small rapids along the way.
Mountain Biking
Three mountain biking routes, covering 10 km, 20 km and 40 km, provide opportunities to explore the reserve at your own pace. Riders may encounter black impala, golden wildebeest and springbok while travelling through a changing landscape of koppies, grasslands and indigenous bush. Early morning and late afternoon rides are particularly rewarding, with the setting sun adding to the scenery. The routes were designed by leading mountain biker Marc Adam and offer options for a range of fitness levels.
Nature Trails
A network of nature trails allows guests to explore the game farm on foot, whether enjoying a relaxed walk or a more energetic trail run. The routes pass through varied terrain, including open grasslands, natural bush and areas shaded by indigenous vegetation. Guests can take in the scenery while watching for wildlife along the way.
Stargazing
Far from major sources of artificial light, the lodge offers excellent conditions for observing the night sky. Once darkness settles, the limited light pollution reveals an impressive display of stars, planets and constellations, making stargazing a memorable way to end the day.
Birdwatching
The river and surrounding game farm provide habitat for a variety of bird species. Fish eagles are among the notable birds that may be seen soaring overhead, while numerous other species can be observed in the surrounding vegetation and open country. Birdwatching offers a peaceful way to appreciate the area's abundant natural life.
