About Visit The Kalkkop Crater
Visit the crater that was created when a 20 meter wide meteorite crashed into earth over 250,000 years ago. Close to Kendrew, roughly 50 kilometers from Graaff Reinet you will find this historic site.
This is the third known crater in South Africa and is situated on private farmlands which can be accessed easily via dirt roads. The meteor left a crater that was about 90 meters deep and 640 meters wide. After some time a shallow pool of salty water was created at the bottom, during evaporation, a limestone layer was all that was left.
Once again the pool was created and again a deposit of lime left behind. After many years of this, the crater filled up with limestone and as the Karoo region grew drier, erosion occurred, leaving just the rim of the crater visible today.
This historical site is an extremely fascinating place to visit with scientific value.
