Grahamstown is known for its colonial history and for being the home of Rhodes University, but it is also earning its place on the golfing map, thanks to the Belmont Golf Course.

This is an 18-hole course that is fewer than 10 kilometres from the town centre, nestled in the pretty Belmont Valley; a serene farming community in the heart of the Eastern Cape. The pace is slower, the people are friendly, and the climate ideal almost all year round.

This course was designed by Tyrone Yates, who has the design and management of a number of esteemed courses under his belt. It includes 12 holes on the western side of the ride and six on the eastern side. On the eastern side, there are breath-taking views of the farmlands, while the western side boasts vistas of valleys, trees, rivers and hills.

The tranquil Kowie River winds its way through the course, and the old oak trees that thrive on its waters add another dimension to the challenge and beauty. The trees and water attract a variety of bird species too. Look out for the crowned hornbill and perhaps even a fish eagle.

The holes are short but challenging, which means that Belmont is great for beginners and pros alike. Book your accommodation in Grahamstown and your tee-off ahead to avoid disappointment.

The Belmont Golf Course has a clubhouse, which is equipped with a play area for children, as well as a putting green and driving range for those wanting to squeeze a little extra practice in. Moreish food and ice-cold beers or popular South African wines are on offer here too, making a day on the greens one that the whole family can enjoy.

Grahamstown is about an hour's drive from Port Elizabeth and the Addo Elephant National Park, and two hours from East London.
