About Borakalalo National Park

The beautiful Borakalalo National Park, just 60 kilometres north of Brits in the North West Province, boasts an incredible array of plant and animal life, as well as mile after mile of utter scenic splendour.

Did you know? The name Borakalalo means "The place where people relax".

This park covers an impressive area of 13 500 hectares, which includes open scrubby bush and gorgeous woodlands. The Moratele River flows through the park and is flanked by forests that flourish on its waters. These different habitat types mean that the wildlife species that live in them are equally diverse. This river leads to the Klipvoor Dam, and keen anglers will love spending the day sitting on the water’s edge and trying their hand at catching carp, bream, barbel, and even the odd yellowfish.

Thanks to the abundance of foliage and water, Borakalalo National Park is also home to more than 350 bird species. This birdlife includes rare species like the African finfoot and the white-backed heron, as well as several species of eagles and raptors.

Other wildlife species that make for exciting findings and even better photographs include the leopard, white rhinoceros, giraffe, zebra, gemsbok, sable, and a selection of other graceful antelope.

There are wilderness trails and self-guided walking trails through the park, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the raw, authentic allure of Africa – its golden grasses brushing your fingertips, the heat of the sun on your back, the hot air settling on your face and arms, and the subtle rustle of animals around you.

Game drives, or safaris, are wonderfully rewarding as you get to spot many of these animals hunting, grazing, interacting, and sometimes playing within their natural habitat. There are more than 100 kilometres of gravel roads to explore by vehicle (the roads are accessible to both 4 x 4 and 2 x 4 vehicles).

Brits is an agricultural and industrial town that is about an hour’s drive from Pretoria and two hours from Johannesburg in Gauteng.
