Noupoort, Upper Karoo
Booking your holiday accommodation in Noupoort is about more than just enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the Karoo. This little town is all about the history, character and charm that are so quintessentially and irresistibly South African.
Noupoort was once a popular railway town; conveniently perched between the Upper Karoo and the Karoo Heartland (between Hanover in the Northern Cape and the border of the Eastern Cape, on the N9 motorway). Back in the 1920's, this little town would see more than 85 trains passing through it every day. It connected the centres of Cape Town, Namibia and Kimberley to facilitate the transport of important goods. Today, it is still a change-over hub for trains (diesel and electric) on the Bloemfontein railway. It also featured in the Anglo-Boer War and was home to one of the best British blockhouses in the Southern Hemisphere.
Being situated in the foothills of the Compassberg Mountains, Noupoort boasts really breath-taking views of the South African landscape. This is the land of hills, valleys, rugged mountain ranges, and roads that stretch on as far as the eye can see. These dramatic backdrops add a spectacular flavour to your road trip and vacation photos. It is also well known as the scenic locale of a drug rehabilitation facility, where the pretty surrounds provide the ideal setting for recovery from addiction.
Noupoort is only 145 kilometres from the renowned Camdeboo National Park, which shows off a magnificently unique ancient landscape that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. It is about four hours from Port Elizabeth, and 1.5 hours from the historical little town of Graaff-Reinet.
