Rooiberg, Waterberg
Booking overnight accommodation in Rooiberg is ideal for visitors to Limpopo that want to stay in a quiet, peaceful town away from the big city. It is situated between Thabazimbi (nestled against the dramatic backdrops of mountain ranges) and Bela-Bela (also known as Warmbaths for its hot springs).
Rooiberg was initially constructed as a mining town but, when the mine was closed down, it was completely deserted. After it ran into a state of total disrepair, a consortium bought it. Soon, it flourished and has become the quiet home of choice for many pensioners that love its peaceful charm. Still, its a wonderful choice for families, tourists and honeymooners that want to experience the quieter side of the South African experience.
The town is equipped with a couple of general dealer stores and pubs, as well as a range of cosy accommodation options. These make it an ideal base from which to explore Limpopo and the neighbouring province of Gauteng. Rooiberg is just over two hours from Pretoria and just less than two hours from the Pilanesberg National Park (home to all of the Big Five elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and lion and a hotspot for the ultimate African safari).
