During the Anglo-Boer War a British fort was built from raw semi-precious stones found in the Prieska region, called Tiger Eye. The fort standing on a hilltop overlooks Prieska; the hillside is the Ria Huysamen Aloe Garden. This desert garden is of great interest to aloe and succulent enthusiasts. Named after its first manager Mrs M.E Huysamen this municipal garden boasts a diversity of drought resistant plants.
Measuring 2600m² in size, gravel paths separate more than 50 rockeries filled with approximately 70 true species of aloe and natural hybrids. Indigenous trees provide protection from the African sun, wind and frost but all plants are able to survive and withstand the severe dry summer heat and cold winters layered with frost.
There are 10 specimen plants of Aloe Buhrii which is a rare find as well as other succulents including Dinteranthus, Euphorbia, Haworthia, Lithops, Stapelia, Titanopsis, Trichocaulon and the rarer Haworthia Truncata and Titanopsis Fulleri. The Encephalartos Horridus and Dioscera Elephantipes are unusual cyads found in this garden with a tortoise-like tuber. Enjoy this burst of botanic life in arid landscape.
