The Moolmanshoek 4x4 Trail actually comprises a number of routes that are ideal for the different vehicle capabilities and driving experiences of local and international visitors. These routes are nestled within the Moolmanshoek Nature Reserve, secluded in the heart of the magnificent Witteberg Mountain Range. This part of the Eastern Free State Province of South Africa is nothing short of spectacular when it comes to breath-taking views and stunning backdrops.
These trails cover a total length of about 50 kilometres, and take anything from two to 48 hours to complete, depending on which trails you choose and your level of expertise. These routes have official gradings of between two and five. They are circular trails that all require a guide to complete, and cannot be done independently of a qualified guide. The terrain includes areas of mud and sandstone, as well as rock plates, streams and deep dongas that promise great ascents and descents.
The winter months become extremely cold and the high-lying areas of Moolmanshoek are often laden with pristine white snow. So, explorers coming to tackle Moolmanshoek and its trails during these chilly months should come prepared.
Drivers coming to venture out onto the Moolmanshoek 4x4 Trails should look out for some of the wildlife that characterises the area. This includes a fantastic range of antelope, as well as black-backed jackals, caracals, mongooses, and zebras. In addition, there are more than 230 different species of birds.
