About Malutizicht Lodge

Malutizicht Lodge is an ideal picturesque getaway, centrally situated in the Eastern Free State, midway between the towns of Ficksburg and Fouriesburg on the R26 and within easy distance to Lesotho, Golden Gate and Clarens.

Malutizicht Lodge consists of 9 double en-suite bedrooms in two separate houses and one double en-suite bedroom chalet. Each unit has an open fireplace in the lounge for which wood is supplied. There are wall mounted panel heaters and under carpet heating. Accommodation is fully equipped, strictly self catering and fully serviced on a daily basis.

Stone Lodge
The house can accommodate 10 guests in 2 double rooms and 3 twin rooms. All rooms are en-suite. The house comprises a fully equipped kitchen, a lounge and a dining room, as well as a large covered verandah. The house is adjacent to the heated indoor pool and games room. Guests have access to an outdoor braai area, and wood is supplied.

The Cottage
The cottage comprises 4 en-suite bedrooms; 2 with twin beds and 2 with double beds. The cottage also contains a fully equipped kitchen, a lounge and a dining room, as well as a verandah.

The Chalet
The chalet comprises 1 bedroom with twin beds. There is also a fold-up bed for 1 or 2 children. The chalet also comprises a fully equipped kitchen, and a living room with a fireplace, as well as a verandah.

Malutizicht Lodge is ideal for large family gatherings and celebrations. There is a recreation area available to both houses which includes an indoor pool heated to 28 degrees in summer and 26 degrees in winter, a bar area with fridge and dart board, tables and chairs. Adjacent to this is an outdoor braai area for which wood is supplied. Each house also has a Weber braai.

There is a wide range of fauna and flora on the property with game such as Duiker, Grey Rhebok and Steenbok. Large birds such as Goliath Heron, Secretary bird, Bald Ibis, Jackal Buzzard and African Harrier Hawk (Gymnogene) occur on the property and colourful species such as African Hoopoe, Crested Barbet and Malachite sunbird can be seen around the houses.

There are also flocks of Guinea fowl, Francolin and various waterfowl. In the indigenous forest on the way to the ‘picnic spot’, there are a variety of trees such as White Stinkwood, Wild Fig, Wild Olive etc. Wild flowers on the mountainside include Proteas, Aloes and Watsonias.

In nearby Ficksburg, you have access to banking facilities, Internet Café and restaurants.

Hiking anywhere on the property is permitted. There are three marked walks on the property: 1 – The Picnic Spot Walk – complete walk takes about 1 hour. 2 – The Rock Art Walk – takes 1½ hours and 3 – The Baboonskop Walk – takes 1½ hours – challenging.

Mountain Biking
The roads on the property are suitable for mountain biking and there are three district roads near the entrance which offer superb scenery and virtually no traffic.

4 x 4 Driving
There are no extreme tracks on the farm but there are several roads suitable for exploring the property which are suitable for 4 x 4 or high clearance vehicles. Being close to both the Caledonspoort (Fouriesburg) and Ficksburg border posts into Lesotho, day drives can be undertaken to Oxbow and the Afriski resort and Katse dam respectively. (Passports required).

Verified reviewvery good

The lodge is comfortable and the views very pretty. We, however, wanted to do some fishing. It is clear that the dam above the lodge had not been used for fishing for some time. It appears to now be merely a drinking hole for cows. The caretaker sent us down to the bottom dams on the other side of the road. The first dam showed no sign of life and the second dam was completely dried up. This was a disappointment. The website clearly advertises fishing for carp, trout and bass. This misinformation should be removed as it is misleading.

Thank you for a lovely getaway moment. I enjoyed the view, the ambience, the accommodation. Friendly staff and a quiet atmosphere helped bring about a relaxing weekend. I'm sorry for feeding the peacocks so much ;-)
