Goldfields West Golf Course,
Carletonville, Gauteng / North West Province: East Driefontein Mine,
Carletonville. The Goldfields West Golf course meanders through a nature reserve, which is
naturally a most relaxing and a completely unspoiled environment where buck are free to
roam and the birdlife is prolific.
The well-watered Gold Fields West (par-72) is a relatively short course by modern standard
and the five par-fives, which each measure less than 470 metres, all offer birdie
opportunities. It is even possible for the golfer of medium strength to get close to the
greens with two full shots.
The superb fairways are fairly wide and the greens are big and receptive. This helps to
compensate for the difficulties which the golfer may experience with the putting blade.
The original clubhouse at Gold Fields West was a conversion of a late 19th-century
farmhouse which served as a supply depot on the stagecoach run from Jo-burg to
Potchefstroom. Ruts of the old road can still be seen on parts of the course.
