About Welgevonden Game Reserve

The Welgevonden Game Reserve is a popular weekend safari destination out of Johannesburg. Only 2.5 hours north of Pretoria, Welgevonden Game Reserve is a "Big Five", malaria free game reserve situated in the Waterberg District.

Did you know? The 34,000 hectare Welgevonden reserve is home to over 50 mammal species (including the Big 5), prolific birdlife (over 300 species) and more than 10 different lodges offering accommodation to visitors in search of the ultimate holiday – a game experience.

Welgevonden Game Reserve is a declared Heritage Site of 33000 hectares and borders the Marekele National Park, situated in the breathtaking Waterberg Biosphere. A true bushveld environment is home to some of South Africa's most sought after wildlife species including one of the largest collections of white (square-lip) rhino on private land.

Major game species have been reintroduced into the reserve since 1994. All these reintroduction projects have been a major success, trebling the game population over the past five years. From an original pride of 5 lions, 32 now roam freely within the reserve's boundaries. We have also had success with elephants: from fewer than 50 released into the reserve, there are now 84.

Other major projects include white rhino (for which Welgevonden Game Reserve is renowned), buffalo, sable and gemsbok.

Other species, which were already on the farms when Welgevonden was established, have been allowed to flourish. These include leopard, antelope, giraffe, warthog, bush pig, aardvark, pangolin and many more. Black-backed jackals and the very rare brown hyena have also prospered in the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

To fully appreciate the Welgevonden Game Reserve and all it has to offer we recommend a stay of a few nights. SA-Venues.com proudly features a range of accommodation options within the reserve to suit all travel needs and budgets.

Our Welgevonden Accommodation search facility is easy to use and you make your accommodation bookings directly with the venues. Lodges within the Welgevonden reserve include self-catering and fully catered game lodges. Special offers (when available) are highlighted, and guest reviews will help you make informed choices.
