Marken, Waterberg

Marken is a small town that is defined by its spectacular setting, right at the edge of the impressive Waterberg Mountain Range. The region has a tranquillity that transcends the hustle and bustle of the South African cities, settling deep in the hearts of visitors that make this their retreat.

This part of the Limpopo Province boasts a different kind of natural beauty; one that is sometimes stark and rugged, sometimes lush and colourful. Mountains, gorges and streams meet rolling bushveld, which combine to create the ideal habitat for a number of different plant and animal species.

The town of Marken is conveniently situated just off the N11 motorway and on the road to Lephalale. Thanks to the natural abundance, a number of parks and reserves can be found near the small hub of the town, many of which are even home to the famous African Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos).

These reserves include the Waterberg Biosphere and the Mabalingwe Game Reserve. Other nearby attractions include the Entabeni Game Reserve, Makapansgat Caves, Arend Dieperink Museum, and Blouberg Nature Reserve.

The Waterberg Mountains surrounding Marken are stunning for hiking, walking and cycling enthusiasts. The views are spectacular and the terrain offers different areas; some challenging, others more suited to families or those just wanting to enjoy a day out in the South African sunshine.
