About Sonnikas Biltong
On the heights of the Highveld escarpment, in the heart of the scenic province of Mpumalanga, is the ethereal town of Kaapsehoop. It is known for its historical richness and its natural beauty but, most of all, for its laid-back allure that is impossible to ignore. This little town is the proud home of Sonnikas Biltong at Kaapsehoop, where some of the best South African treats are on offer.
Sonnikas Biltong stocks a wide variety of traditional delicacies and local favourites. These include biltong, peppered biltong, dry wors (a dried, spiced sausage), chilli-bites, batwings (shaved sheets of biltong), BBQ sticks, cabanossi (a dried sausage that is similar to salami), salami, salami sticks, bacon bites, biltong powder and smoked Norwegian salmon. The koeksisters here also a must for anyone with a sweet tooth and a hankering for authentic South African ‘pudding'. These sticky, syrupy, deep-fried pastries are nothing if not irresistible.
Included in the complex is an art gallery, where recycled goods are ‘up-cycled' into gorgeous pieces by local artists. These are for sale to visitors that want to add something unique to their art collection.
Every Sunday and on public holidays, Sonnikas hosts a market that is open to the public. Peruse the stalls and discover the arts, crafts, tasty treats, homemade preserves, pickles, ginger beer, antiques, jewellery, baked goods, and so on. These are awesome gifts and excellent mementoes.
Nearby attractions for visitors to Kaapsehoop include the history-rich mines and mining villages, as well as the gorgeous trails that surround the town and invite folk to explore the prettiness of Mpumalanga on foot. The shop is located only 500 metres from an old graveyard, where magnificent stones can be seen. Less than a kilometre away is an idyllic waterfall, which tumbles into the lovely Battery Creek. The city of Nelspruit is only 25 kilometres from Sonnikas Biltong and is well equipped with all the conveniences of a metropolitan hub.
